Why is water the first ingredient in so many skincare products?
Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration. Water is most often the largest component by volume in water-based formulas — it's the medium that carries everything else.
Does water in skincare products hydrate the skin?
Temporarily. Water hydrates the skin surface on application, but evaporates quickly. Humectants (like glycerin and HA) and occlusives (like ceramides) in the formula are what provide lasting hydration.
