Saccharomyces Ferment
Also known as: Saccharomyces Ferment, Yeast Extract, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Extract, Yeast Ferment Extract
What It Is
A fermentation extract derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast). Contains a complex of vitamins, amino acids, organic acids, beta-glucans, and enzymes produced during the fermentation process.
What It Does
Provides gentle enzymatic exfoliation, brightening support, barrier-conditioning benefits, and antioxidant action. In milky toners, acts as a gentle resurfacing and radiance-boosting active without the direct acid exfoliation of AHAs.
Best For
Benefits
- Gentle enzymatic exfoliation — softer action than direct acid exfoliants
- Rich in vitamins, amino acids, and beta-glucans from fermentation
- Supports barrier function through conditioning ferment components
- Antioxidant and brightening support
- Better tolerated daily than AHA toners for most skin types
When to Be Careful
- More subtle effect than direct AHA or enzyme peels at equivalent use frequency
- Not the right choice for people who need aggressive texture correction — that requires stronger exfoliants
Fermentation-derived ingredients have strong consumer appeal across skincare (galactomyces, rice ferments, yeast extracts) — both for their rich nutrient profile and their gentler-than-acid exfoliating approach. K-beauty in particular has popularized the category.
Saccharomyces ferment is not a direct acid exfoliant. It provides enzymatic and mild acid exfoliation from fermentation byproducts — a gentler, more nourishing approach, but not equivalent to a 10% AHA for texture improvement.
After cleansing, before serums — as a toner prep step. Can be used daily or twice daily. No rinsing required in toner format.
Squalane (conditioning partner in milky toner formats), Hyaluronic Acid (hydration boost), Niacinamide
Yeast allergies are rare but exist. Anyone with a known yeast sensitivity should patch test.
Very gentle — overuse effects are unlikely compared to acid exfoliants.
